Internet connectivity is becoming one of the daily necessities to us due to the ongoing pandemic and many people having to work from home. We have major Internet service providers(ISP’s) providing broadband connection as well as telecom operators providing cellular networks for us to browse the internet. But for some rural areas, this internet connectivity is not possible due to the lack of development and infrastructure to provide service to them.
This is an unaddressed issue in some developing countries our India is also facing a similar situation and actively working to address this issue by introducing schemes and providing subsidies to the entities responsible for this. To combat this problem the state-run telecom operator BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) is getting ready to deploy radio-based internet connectivity called ‘BSNL AirFibre’. This new service is aimed at helping rural areas that are unable to get network infra to have connectivity without compromising on speed and reliability.
Bharat Fiber
BSNL is starting to deploy BSNL AirFibre to help villages and rural areas getting access to internet connectivity. This fresh service is one of the core objectives of BSNL’s plan to provide internet connectivity to rural areas. But BSNL already has a different service namely the BSNL BharatFiber service. You can say BSNL AirFiber and BharatFiber sound similar but both of them are very different in their respective task.
BharatFibre works on a fiber to the home (FTTH) way of approach that uses wired technology to provide broadband services while the new BSNL AirFibre service is mostly wireless and very easy for the user to get it installed at his or her home at a relatively low cost. BSNL stated that it will be using line-of-sight radio waves to deploy and expand the BSNL AirFibre and in doing so it aims to keep the costs in check for both them and the user. They also assured that they will provide call-center services to the villages so that they don’t have any bad experience or to quickly resolve any complaint or issue they might have.

According to a comment from the BSNL director, “the new BSNL Air Fibre service will be exclusively launched on the unlicensed spectrum that has not been licensed to any entity as of now, which is a major boost to this project. Since this unlicensed spectrum has very little interference and is uncongested due to the lack of other disturbing signals, which in term should help the quality of relay and can be expected to be better for the users and adopters in villages where there is very little disturbance for these airwaves” quoted by BSNL Director, Vivek Banzal.
The absence of WiFi routers and home appliances like microwave ovens in the villages helps them to work around these easier for the BSNL AirFiber services to work due to less interference from the lack of these items. As well as BSNL’s Triple Play plan they are introducing also includes voice and internet services Which will be available for BSNL AirFiber users to select from a wide range of plans also. Apart from this, BSNL has also partnered with YuppTV to offer video streaming services to the customers for them to enjoy content without needing to pay extra for these types of services.
