IIT Ropar which is at Punjab and Monash University, Had come up with a new idea. Generally in this pandemic situation, Everyone is using Virtual meeting platforms like Zoom, Google meets, Microsoft teams…etc. But there an issue some naughty people will attend the meeting and start disturbing the meeting. A new tool came into the picture called ‘DeepFakes’ developed by Artificial Intelligence. And also used for like. Think of this you were posting pics to social media and other places on the internet hoping to get likes and becoming popular.

But have u thought of what is happening to those pictures?? For example, take any popular celebrity or big shot. Who is well known and someone on social media’s like Facebook posted a picture or video saying that they are raising funds, for some charity and urging users to donate money or spreading fake news. Saying that they did something bad using their pictures and videos. Even though they admit that they didn’t. Sounds scary right this is what is known as morphing or deepfakes. It has its goods and bad. Let’s know what is it and how it works

How it works ‘DeepFakes’?

Deepfakes is nothing but using AI to make fake videos or photos using still images and training the computer using machine learning. To replace the original faces on the photos or videos with other images and blending. It smoothly without making it obvious to the audience that it was computer-generated. Firstly the computer is fed with lots of still images with different angles and then it learns to insert facial expressions. Onto targeted videos using machine learning. As the AI’s are becoming more and more advanced it is getting very difficult to discern what is original and what is duplicate.

Also used for

This was mainly used to be in films to recreate some actors who had untimely demise or to hide the actor’s age or some other unruly things. It only stayed mainly in movies and was involved only in productions because it requires, some serious horsepower in this case heavy computing for this to work efficiently and the systems. Present with normal users weren’t that powerful. But times have changed and the processing power of the systems started to increase to the point where a single person can make a whole animated movie.

This also raised the spilling of deepfakes onto the internet and people using it for fun things to make themselves be in their favorite movies. As main characters or making sarcastic videos. As always there is the other side of the coin where people use the deepfakes for doing bad things and making trouble to others. In some cases, these people are using deepfakes for substituting an interview candidate with other experienced people to secure a job as the big institutions and other MNC’s are using video calls and virtual meetings to interview the recruits. Which are not good for them if they get scammed or unable to give jobs to truly the people who deserve them.

Scope

This technology was also getting used in pornography and on dark webs for using it for preplanning for terror activities. People started to raise concerns over this issue. Some argue that this technology should be banned whereas some defend it saying that the people. Who misuse it should be punished as it has fallen into wrong hands. Whatever it may be to curb the misuse of deepfakes and to detect. If a video is fake or not some researchers at IIT Ropar with the help of Monash University based in Australia developed a tool called ‘FakeBuster’. That detects during video calls or webinars that the attendee is fake or real and it can be detected 90% of the time.

As more and more people are getting used to working from home during these pandemic situations. It is very useful for institutions and for others to know that while they are conducting webinars, online exams, and interviews. That the intended person was taking it and not some random person using deepfakes.

This shows us that we are at a stage where we can create and develop anything due to the advancement of technology. But it does always has two sides like a coin, how we use it depends on the likes of users like you and me. What do u think the future of deepfakes looks like let us know and share our thoughts on this from a different perspective.

  1. We wish to thank you yet again for the lovely ideas you gave Jeremy when preparing a post-graduate research and also, most importantly, regarding providing each of the ideas
in a single blog post. Provided that we had been aware
of your web page a year ago, we may have been rescued from the pointless measures we were participating in. Thank you very much.
